Pathways for transversal skills
and orientation / School-Work Alternation
The school-work alternation, initially introduced in Italy in 2003, is
an innovative teaching methodology that allows students to combine
school training with a period of experience in a public or private
institution.

THE VIBRATIONAL SPECTRO-MICROSCOPY:
INVESTIGATING MATTER BY FOLLOWING THE DANCE OF THE MOLECULES
Atoms and molecules organize in space to form gases, liquids and solids,
but the molecules never "rest" and each one moves in its own way, with a
particular and unique dance. This "molecular dance" can be studied with
a special microscope, the Raman microscope, capable of analyzing the
light scattered by materials due to the characteristic vibrations of
the molecules that compose them.
Educational and training objectives, topics for discussion:
-
history and key concepts of vibrational spectroscopy, molecular
vibrations, phononic modes, correlation with the chemical-physical
properties of the samples and with the environmental parameters;
-
differences and complementarities between infrared absorption
techniques and the Raman technique based on diffusion;
-
basic elements of technological advancement in the field of
vibrational spectroscopy; laser sources and high sensitivity CCD detectors;
-
direct use of laboratory equipment for the collection of point spectra
and spectral maps, sample management, acquisition parameters, working methods;
-
analysis, comparison and interpretation of experimental data: spectra,
maps and the role of statistical analysis of the results;
-
how a researcher works, between curiosity and rigor, doubt and sharing of
results; how science proceeds between hypotheses, verification, comparison
and discussion of results; how knowledge is influenced and oriented by
technological development.
